Since 2023, the China Nuclear Energy Association (CNEA), acting on behalf of the National Nuclear Safety Administration, has organized peer reviews of radioactive waste management in nuclear power plants and completed four such reviews to date. In order to summarize the achievements and good practices of previous work, and to continuously improve the Technical Specification for Peer Review of Radioactive Waste Management in Nuclear Power Plants, the CNEA organized an experience exchange meeting on peer review of radioactive waste management in nuclear power plants in Beijing on 17 July.
The meeting reviewed the development history of peer reviews of radioactive waste management in nuclear power plants. Each review team leader reported on the organization, implementation, main issues identified and best practices in the peer reviews of Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant and Ling’ao Nuclear Power Plant, Qinshan Nuclear Power Base and Yangjiang Nuclear Power Plant, respectively.
Participating experts then held in-depth discussions about the Technical Specification for Peer Review of Radioactive Waste Management in Nuclear Power Plants. They proposed ways to optimize and improve the objectives, criteria, and implementation methods of peer reviews, as well as specific requirements to further promote and apply the good practices identified in the reviews. These contributions will help to improve radioactive waste management in various nuclear power plants, address common industry concerns, and promote progress across the sector.
